Drawings, Party, Play on Tap for 3rd Annual BANANA OPEN Junior Challenge

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-NEWS) – It’s Day One of the Banana Open Junior Challenge and the little bananas are running all over Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center, taking in the start of the championship and novice divisions and joining in the all-for-fun Adult/Child round robin that is all for the benefit of the Charles P. Darby Children’s Research Institute at Medical University of South Carolina.

Friends of the Children and Hilton Head Prep Moms for Research are hosting the third annual run of the junior competition. Matches will start at 9 a.m. Saturday and continue all day Saturday and wrap up Sunday morning at PD.

Tonight’s activity was a festive players party served up by Jim ‘n’ Nick’s Bar-B-Q with Hilton Head Prep moms doing banana splits on the side. Youngsters were becoming the face in a banana, getting photos taken while sticking their heads in the face hole of a banana drawing board. “Go Bananas” stickers were everywhere. On court, the well-fed joined in the adult/child round robin.

A major feature of the fundraiser will be prize drawings with top offering of seven nights lodging at a destination of the winner’s choice through RCI. Other auction items include an original painting by Martha Worthy; an autographed pin flag signed by the 2009 Verizon Heritage winner Brian Gay; a Head Radical tennis racket; a Darius Rucker of Hootie and the Blowfish-autographed guitar; sunset sail for four adults aboard the Stars and Stripes; Heather Trew Original Design Guardian Angel Bracelet; massage by Kim Brewer; Pretty Papers of Wexford gift certificate and more.

Tickets are $20 each or three for $50. Drawing for the prizes will be held at midday Sunday. Ticketholders do not have to be present to win.

For further information, call Palmetto Dunes at 785-1152.

Two years ago TENNIS E-News ran a well-received series of excerpts from "The Code, The Players' Guide for Unofficiated Matches". You have asked for a repeat? You got it.

What is the correct ruling covering "hitting the tennis ball on the opponent's side of the court? Rule 24 – Player loses point if … (h.) the player hits the ball before it has passed the net. Rule 25 – It is a good return if … (b.) after the ball is play has hit the ground within the correct court and has spun or been blown back over the net, the player reaches over the net and plays the ball into the correct court.

*Note: TENNIS E-News is not making up these items. All are taken word-for-word from USTA's "The Code" that can be found in the "Friend at Court" handbook or as a stand-alone leaflet -- available by going to http://www.usta.com and selec ting "USTA Shop" and then "Books" on that page.
