HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-NEWS) – With too many stories to tell, 11 Hilton Head Island and Coastal Carolina teams advanced to Monday semifinals of the USTA League South Carolina Senior State Championships that will be played at Sea Pines and South Beach Racquet Clubs. That’s one-half of the HHI/CCTA contingent among the 98 teams and 1,500 players in the tournament.

The 3.0 HHI/CCTA men’s and women’s teams, knocked out of contention in the 2008 champions will be in it in spades with seven of eight teams in the semifinals. All three seeded HHI men’s teams and CCTA’s #1 will square off at 8 a.m. at Sea Pines RC. The two district women’s #1 teams will meet in the semis while CCTA #2 will face the Columbia sole non-area team also at 8 a.m.

Unbeaten 4.0 HHI #1 Port Royal Pirates and HHI #2 Indigo Run are set for semis as are the HHI 3.5 women’s Spring Lake Twisted Sisters – the women at 8 a.m. at South Beach and the men at 9:30 at Sea Pines RC.

Two men’s teams had to recover from Saturday losses to get into the semifinals. The 3.0 HHI #1 Spring Lake Lakers won 3-0 to advance by virtue of courts won. HHI’s 3.5 Long Cove Mates broke a first-place tie to win 2-1 and get to the semifinals. Both matches are at 8 a.m. at Sea Pines.

Missing from today’s results, as inexplicably not posted like two matches Saturday, is just one match that may have decided the only championship up for grabs today: Men’s 2.5. Add the contending HHI/Country Club of Hilton Head Court Jesters, up one match on CCTA/Dataw Dynosores, and it means that 13 area teams are still in the championship mix.

Winners of the semifinals Monday will advance to finals scheduled for noon and 2 p.m. Overall champions will advance to Southern Section Championships in July in Birmingham AL.

Here are results and the schedule of HHITL and CCTA teams as gleaned (still cross-eyed) from TennisLink.

(Key to abbreviations: AATL = Aiken Area; CCTA = Bluffton to Beaufort area; CTL = Columbia; FTA = Foothills/Greenville; GATA = Greenwood; GSTL = GrandStrand/Myrtle Beach; LATA = Lexington Area; LCTA = Lowcountry/CharlestonArea; MCTL = Mid-Carolina/York County/Rock Hill; PD = PeeDee/Florence; SATL = Spartanburg Area; UPTA = Upper Piedmont/Greenville)

Two years ago TENNIS E-News ran a well-received series of excerpts from "The Code, The Players' Guide for Unofficiated Matches". You have asked for a repeat? You got it.

Opponent’s call questioned. When a player genuinely doubts an opponent’s call, the player may ask: “Are you sure of your call?” If the opponent reaffirms that the ball was out, the call shall be accepted. If the opponent acknowledges uncertainty, the opponent loses the point. There shall be no further delay or discussion.

Spectators never to make calls. A player shall not enlist the aid of a spectator in making a call. No spectator has a part in the match.

*Note: TENNIS E-News is not making up these items. All are taken word-for-word from USTA's "The Code" that can be found in the "Friend at Court" handbook or as a stand-alone leaflet -- available by going to http://www.usta.com and selecting "USTA Shop" and then "Books" on that page.
