USTA SC League Version of Davis & Fed Cups: HHITL & CCTA vs. Rest of the State

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-NEWS) – Senior Ladies and Gentlemen, start your engines. The SC 500 …. Oops, wrong sport.

Last weekend was Junior Tennis Galore on the Island. This weekend will be all about Seniors, as more than 1,000 players check in for the USTA League South Carolina Senior State Championships. Or, as TENNIS E-NEWS likes to characterize it: The HHI (and now CCTA) vs. The Rest of South Carolina Cup.

The 22 HHI and Coastal Carolina teams competing make up a big chunk of the 98 teams in the draws that range from the 2.5s through 4.5s. Last May before creation of the CCTA, 28 HHI League teams were among the 109 teams competing. We’ll have to await USTA SC arrival to find out why the drop in the overall numbers. A USC-Beaufort study showed that the ’08 championships brought almost $1.4 million into the HHI economy.

This is the first Spring season championships since HHI and the mainland split into two league districts. Now, some of the teams are surprised to be bunched in the same preliminary round robin groups. Two first match pairings are HHI vs. CCTA and the 2.5s, well, there are only two teams entered and you can guess which districts they represent.

The captains’ meeting and big players’ party will be Friday evening, with in-group round robins running all Saturday and Sunday. Group winners, plus a few wild cards because of lower entry numbers, will go into Monday’s semifinals and finals. Overall champions will advance to Southern Section Championships in July in Birmingham AL.

Here is the lineup of HHITL and CCTA teams headed to States with captains’ names in (parentheses):

M2.5 – HHI/Country Club of Hilton Head Court Jesters (Dennis Snyder); CCTA/Dataw Dynasores (Richard Purdy)

Well, We Flipped This One

It was actually Ann Marie Kemper and Kaitlin Jane Groetzinger (SCYacht Club) who defeated Cara Py and Andrea Messier (Spanish Wells) in the 2.5 Ms. Fits showdown between SCYC and Spanish Wells Love Means Nothing that decided the Adult 2.5 championship and not the other way around as it appeared in the last E-News issue.

Two years ago TENNIS E-News ran a well-received series of excerpts from "The Code, The Players' Guide for Unofficiated Matches". You have asked for a repeat? You got it.

A tournament or league mandates a 10-point tiebreak in lieu of a third set, but, at 7-4, players shake hands and report their scores to the tournament desk or team captain. What happens? By shaking hands, the players have acknowledged that they agreed the match was over. Even though the USTA (tournament or league) mandates the use of the 10-point tiebreak, the 7-point tiebreak was played in good faith.

*Note: TENNIS E-News is not making up these items. All are taken word-for-word from USTA's "The Code" that can be found in the "Friend at Court" handbook or as a stand-alone leaflet -- available by going to http://www.usta.com and selecting "USTA Shop" and then "Books" on that page.
