4 HHI, CCTA Teams Win South Carolina Senior States Championships

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-NEWS) – While they’re still talking about Bill Moss’ smack down the line clinching a third-set match tiebreak 11-9 and the team match 2-1 Saturday, Hilton Head Island teams ran away with three championships and Coastal Carolina one today in the USTA League South Carolina Senior State Championships.

Rain doused the very end of matches today with one division in question and another settled by league ruling.

The Moss tiebreak break decided the first of three matches between the Men’s 2.5 Country Club of Hilton Head Court Jesters and Dataw Dynasores. CCHH, captained by Dennis Snyder, won again Sunday to clinch the championships, first of three HHI teams would take home.

The other two HHI wins were the comeback stories locally. The Men’s 3.5 Long Cove Mates, captained by Court and Men’s 3.5 Spring Lake Lakers, captained by Tom Larkin, each had stumbled Saturday and had to scramble with Sunday wins to make the semis. No scrambling today as both teams won all six semis and final courts for championships and advancement to Southern Sectionals in July in Birmingham.

Coastal Carolina’s Women’s 3.0 Dataw Darlins, captained by Barbara Krekehl, gave the fledgling CCTA its first Senior States championship. (Save that for Tennis Trivia.) The Darlins defeated CCTA #2 Sun City Sweet Shots, captained by Jane Brown, in the finals, providing one of the five finalist spots reached by the HHI and CCTA teams. Two of the other local finalists also came in second to “crosstown” rivals: Men’s 3.0 Port Royal Beach Bums, captained by John Kellom, and Men’s 2.5 Dataw Dynasores, captained by Richard Purdy.

The Women’s 4.5 Indigo Run Golden Bear Naked Ladies, captained by Nanci Staple, had a chance at the championship but the final match at 2 p.m. was rained out at “midstream”. Tournament officials awarded first place to Lexington’s Just a Number, but also gave the Naked Ladies a wildcard to Birmingham Sectionals.

TENNIS E-NEWS is yet to figure the 2.5s’ situation which, to his point, remains officially posted as a 1-1 tie in team records. The Sunday match, won by CCHH has yet to be recorded. E-News has it on usually reliable sources that the result is as stated above. Whatever ………….

Despite the wet conclusion, there should be lots of smiles on the ledger books of HHI lodging, restaurant and shop owner faces, with 1,500 players in the tournament. The 2008 championships, fourth of six years the event will be on HHI, brought in $1.4 million in area revenue.

Two years ago TENNIS E-News ran a well-received series of excerpts from "The Code, The Players' Guide for Unofficiated Matches". You have asked for a repeat? You got it.

Can a player’s own action be the basis for that player claiming a let or a hindrance? No. Nothing a player does entitles that player to call a let. For example, a player is not entitled to a let because the player breaks a string, the player’s hat falls off or a ball in the player’s pocket falls out.

*Note: TENNIS E-News is not making up these items. All are taken word-for-word from USTA's "The Code" that can be found in the "Friend at Court" handbook or as a stand-alone leaflet -- available by going to http://www.usta.com and selecting "USTA Shop" and then "Books" on that page.
