PD Net Jets, Port Royal Come One Court Short in Finals at Southern Combo Championships

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News via TennisLink) – Port Royal and the PD Net Jets carried the HHI league banner to new heights today even though both came up a couple points short of winning the Southern Section Championships in Mobile AL. HHI teams have not done especially well in advanced combo playoffs, but, like in other formats, it was the seniors leading the way.

The Port Royal guys won one third-set match tiebreak in today’s 7.5 Senior final against Anniston AL, but they needed two. PR, captained by Dave Partington, had won the South Carolina Super Senior Championship and, with most of the same players, placed second in Senior 7.5s. They chose to go for the Senior title as the SC “B” team and almost pulled off the title win.

The Net Jets also got a match tiebreak win on one court today but lost in straight sets on the other two against Knoxville TN in the Senior Women’s 6.5s.

TENNIS E-News came fairly close yesterday to guessing what happened Saturday and Sunday: Rain and pro sets and fake-score posting. “We did have a complete rain out (Sunday),” Net Jets Captain Patty Diggs emailed Sunday. “But all the matches were played today just at various times and all eight-game pro sets.”

The Indigo Run Hot Shots lost four match tiebreaks in the Super Senior Women’s 7.5. “These actually were played in the three-set format,” Captain Jeannie Freeman said. “Our last match against North Carolina was pro sets. The rain came midday Saturday while we were playing our 12:30 match and we completed it Sunday AM. Then we played NC at 11:30.”

Freeman offered an “interesting tidbit” – the Hot Shots lost fewer sets, fewer games and beat NC, the Group 1 winner. “We couldn’t get the matches won, however, with ALL of our four losses in 10 pt tiebreakers.”

Catching up on individual results we missed, here are the scores as posted on TennisLink late Sunday:

9:30 a.m. – SW6.5 -- PD Net Jets 2, NC/Lake Norman 1

Ct. 1 – Judy Larkin/Patty Diggs won 6-2, 6-2

Ct. 2 – Pat Leinberger/Mary Clark won 6-1, 6-2

Ct. 3 – Kay Kern/Beth Fishburne lost 7-6, 6-4

11 a.m. – SM7.5 -- Port Royal (SC-B) 2, TN/Knoxville 1

Ct. 1 – Kent James/Sean O’Sullivan won 6-3, 6-3

Ct. 2 – Howard Kirk/Dave Dockum lost 6-0, 6-0

Ct. 3 – Dave Partington/Rick Rickenbach won 7-6, 6-4

11 a.m. – SSW7.5 – Indigo Run Hot Shots 2, NC/Boone 1

And these, we are reasonably sure, are today’s actual scores … except 1-0 is a state of incompetency not a score.

NEW AGAIN IN 2009: Two years ago TENNIS E-News ran a well-received series of excerpts from "The Code, The Players' Guide for Unofficiated Matches". You have asked for a repeat? You got it.

Calling balls on clay courts. If any part of the ball mark touches the line on a clay court, the ball shall be called good. If you can see only part of the mark on the court, this means that the missing part is on the line or tape. A player should take a careful second look at any point-ending placement that is close to a line. Occasionally a ball will strike the tape, jump, and then leave a full mark behind the line. This does not mean that a player is required to show the opponent the mark. The opponent shall not cross the net to inspect the mark. If the player hears the sound of the ball striking the tape and sees a clean spot on the tape near the mark, the player should give the point to the opponent.

If you have a question or situation you would like to have addressed, email banana@hargray.com separately and we will try to help.
