LUCKY THOUGHT FOR TODAY: Super Senior Tennis should have a float in the St. Patrick’s Day parade. Consider it a promotional bragging point. The parade is the weekend before HHI & CCTA Super Senior teams that won SC States go to the Southern Championships in Alabama. Who has a flatbed truck? Load our super Supers on board and brag, brag, brag along the parade route. Maybe even borrow a sign for the truck: MISSION (to be) ACCOMPLISHED.
‘The Split’ Season Openers
NO sissies over here in the Coastal Carolina League …
BLUFFTON SC (TENNIS E-News) – That was Vivian Wayne’s emailed headline, and it was too appropriate to change, noting how things were for start of the USTA League Spring Season on the mainland. Temperatures were you-know, snowflakes were floating, warm-up outfits were a-layering as the Coastal Carolina Tennis Association skied off on its first Adult/Senior season.
The Split of the area leagues into two districts began with last fall’s Super Senior season. That produced nine teams from the combined areas that won South Carolina State Championships at Wild Dunes. HHI leagues begin their season Monday.
Local league women’s coordinator Wayne reported that six of the eight scheduled matches did play Tuesday. Though we won’t be able to carry individual team scores when the whole CCTA and HHI seasons get into swing, we have here … just for historic sake.

3 HHI Teams on the Way to Mobile for Southern Section Combo Championships
HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) – They’re loading the buses and getting ready to leave for the Southern Section Combo League Championships that begin Friday in Mobile AL. Three teams from Hilton Head Island won South Carolina championships last fall and will go against state winners from eight other Southern states: Georgia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, Arkansas and North Carolina.
The Senior Women’s 6.5 PD Net Jets, captained by Patti Diggs, and Super Senior Women’s 7.5 Indigo Run Hot Shots, captained by Jean Freeman, won championships last fall. Port Royal, captained by Dave Partington, won the Super Senior Men’s Combo 7.5 state championship but will be competing in the Senior 7.5s in Mobile.
Play will begin Friday, with all teams competing in group round robins. Super Seniors will complete their championships on Sunday and the Adults and Seniors will finish on Monday. TENNIS E-News will be on the road as well, but “vacationing” in Florida – which just may delay reporting on the Mobile matches. Stay tuned. Ah, and stay warm.

3.0 Senior Men’s Interclub
HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News via Dick Sonberg) -- In a very competitive match Monday, Sea Pines 3.0 team defeated Spring Lake 3-0, while Belfair/Colleton River defeated Indigo Run 3-0. As a result, Sea Pines is the close winner of Round 2 of Flight A and will now play Belfair, winner of Round 1, to determine who plays Country Club of Hilton Head Hustlers, winners of Flight B, for the 3.0 championship.
The playoff between Belfair and Sea Pines will be played Friday at Berkeley Hall at 2 p.m. The winner will play CCHH sometime next week, but not on Monday, since that is the opening day for 3.0 matches in the USTA Senior spring league.

NEW AGAIN IN 2009: Two years ago TENNIS E-News ran a well-received series of excerpts from "The Code, The Players' Guide for Unofficiated Matches". You have asked for a repeat? You got it.
Prompt calls eliminate two-chance option. A player shall make all calls promptly after the ball has hit the court. A call shall be made either before the player's return shot has gone out of play or before the opponent has had the opportunity to play the return shot.
Prompt calls will quickly eliminate the "two chances to win the point" option that some players practice. To illustrate, a player is advancing to the net for an easy putaway and sees a ball from an adjoining court rolling toward the court. The player continues to advance and hits the shot, only to have the supposed easy putaway fly over the baseline. The player then claims a let. The claim is not valid because the player forfeited the right to call a let by choosing instead to play the ball. The player took a chance to win or lose and is not entitled to a second chance.
If you have a question or situation you would like to have addressed, email banana@hargray.com separately and we will try to help.
