Top-ranked players from throughout the Southeast are competing in the USTA-sanctioned championships that will carry extra credit in junior rankings. Play begins in the morning (Hm. Weather permitting) and will continue all day and through Sunday. Finals are scheduled for Monday.

"If your rated 2.5,"...

“I couldn’t believe I saw that in your (E-News),” writes a reader from Clinton SC.

Well, we are a bit redfaced about it, too. That’s one of our pet-est of peeves, along with the misuse of its/it’s, gross overuse of “kickoff” (nothing EVER begins anymore) and residents, businesses and governmental bodies unaware that Hilton Head Island is, ah, an island. (Ask Sun City Hilton Head, Traditions Hilton Head, etc. They know they are on Hilton Head, not Hilton Head Island)

NEW AGAIN IN 2009: Two years ago TENNIS E-News ran a well-received series of excerpts from "The Code, The Players' Guide for Unofficiated Matches". You have asked for a repeat? You got it.

May play be suspended to replace a lost contact lens? Yes. Whenever possible the player should replace the lens on the court.

When weather is misty, may play be suspended to allow a player who wears glasses to insert contact lenses? No. The player may change into contacts only on the court and only during a changeover.

*Note: TENNIS E-News is not making up these items. All are taken word-for-word from USTA's "The Code" that can be found in the "Friend at Court" handbook or as a stand-alone leaflet -- available by going to http://www.usta.com and selecting "USTA Shop" and then "Books" on that page.
