Port Royal?? We’re Not Sure

PD Net Jets in Finals at Southern Section Combo Championships in Mobile

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News via TennisLink) – We’re pretty much guessing on this one, but one thing for sure is that the Senior Women’s 6.5 PD Net Jets have advanced to the Monday finals of the Southern Section Combo Championships in Mobile AL.

We can also pretty much guess that the lack of score posting Saturday night meant that weather washed out the normal schedule for the day and muddied the matchtimes for today. In past cases, this has meant that when scores eventually are posted on TennisLink they will reflect the actual winner but not necessarily the actual scores. It’s a computer formatting situation USTA has not solved yet, together with how to handle reporting a third-set match tiebreak other than the idiotic 1-0.

When we last left our three HHI teams that had won South Carolina championships last fall, all had won their Friday matches. The Net Jets, captained by PattyDiggs, went on to win again Saturday or today and were so far ahead of the other teams (we’re guessing) that they advanced to the final. The Net Jets did not play their fourth scheduled in-group match.

Senior Men’s 7.5 Port Royal, captained by Dave Partington and competing as South Carolina “B”, followed up a Friday win with two more Saturday or today, leaving them tied for Group II lead at 3-0 with Tennessee/Knoxville. No results of that face-off have been posted. The winner is to play the Group I winner on Monday. The HHI guys could end up playing South Carolina “A” Greenwood in the final.

Meanwhile, the Super Senior Women’s 7.5 Indigo Run Hot Shots, captained by Jean Freeman, went 1-2 in matches Saturday and/or today to finish second in their group and out of the finals.

(If you really want to know: when pro sets are used in championship matches, the USTA uses a conversion table in order to enter a score … some score … any score. Like an 8-6 actual pro set may be recorded at 6-3, 6-3 and an 8-4 as 6-2, 6-2 … or whatever.)

Here are results and the schedule involving the HHI league teams:
