BLUFFTON SC (TENNIS E-News) – The “new” USTA League Spring Super Senior Mixed for Coastal Carolina Tennis Association is getting closer to reality, with the league season set for April through June. Coordinator Sally Harvey has set the deadline for pre-registration forms as Tuesday the 10th.
Teams already are registered in the 6.0, 7.0 and 8.0 combo divisions, Harvey said. Anyone interested in forming a team, or looking for a team should contact at sharv@islc.net.
“TAHHI members are welcome to come play in this CCTA League,” she said.
2,874 Members Over-all
Report: TAHHI Leagues Continue To Drive the Tennis Scene
HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) – About 80 Tennis Association of Hilton Head Island members and guests met, dine, sipped and danced the night away Wednesday at the HHI Beach & Tennis Resort – the annual TAHHI meeting and dinner/dance.
The night was lead off by the annual business meeting, during which President Jim Purcell outlined programs of 2008 and those planned for ’08 and reported a total ’08 membership of 2,874. That number reflects the USTA calculation prior to split of the fall leagues following formation of the Coastal Carolina Tennis Association (CCTA).
Local League Coordinator Jackie Reynecke reported the continued growth of league play. The TAHHI/CCTA split continues to be a work in progress with both organizations working to insure that all players that want will get on a team.
TAHHI’s three annual awards were presented. The Dick Stitt Adult Volunteer of the Year Award went to Tim Ryan for his work at Chaplin Public Tennis Center in organizing teams, coordinating play, serving as Public Tennis, Inc., vice president and initiating activities that helped fund PTI’s agreement with the Town of Hilton Head Island for court construction.
The Stan Smith Boys’ Sportsmanship of the Year Award went to Austin Powell and two winners were named for the Kerry Melville Reid Girls’ Sportsmanship of the Year Award: Bethany Dyer and Jeri Reichel. All three were top players in HHI, state and beyond tournaments.
Each of the four honorees received a check for $500.

NEW AGAIN IN 2009: Two years ago TENNIS E-News ran a well-received series of excerpts from "The Code, The Players' Guide for Unofficiated Matches". You have asked for a repeat? You got it.
Question from reader: “Player 1 hits a ball that bounces over the net to Player 2 side of the court but so close that it bounces back up and back over the net to Player 1 side so that Player 2 can't reach the ball, does Player 1 get the point?”
The answer is ‘yes’ according to Rule 24(b) which states that a player loses a point if “The player does not return the ball before it bounces twice consecutively.”
Rule 25 -- A Good Return – adds that it is a good return if (b) “after the ball in play has hit the ground within the correct court and has spun or been blown back over the net, the player reaches over the net and plays the ball into the correct court.”
*Note: TENNIS E-News is not making up these items. All are taken word-for-word from USTA's "The Code" that can be found in the "Friend at Court" handbook or as a stand-alone leaflet -- available by going to http://www.usta.com and selecting "USTA Shop" and then "Books" on that page.
