Bees, Cruisers Champions

So, here’s the deal. Everyone on Hargray Cable send your bar receipts to Hargray for reimbursement because you had to go to the nearest pub to watch tennis, golf and, oh, yes, basketball today because many Hargray customers had a “cable outage” pretty much all day. No, wait, better still, just keep your credit card receipts and notify Hargray you have deducted the amount from payment of the next bill.

PR 4.0s, Jesters Lose in Finals

Killer Bees Sting, Cruisers Cruise for Southern Section Championships

PELHAM AL (TENNIS E-NEWS via TennisLink) – It’s a long way to go to play your cross-island rival, but the Sea Pines Imposters and Spring Lake Cruisers did mind all that much, considering it was in the finals of the USTA League Southern Sectional Championship. The Cruisers won, reversing a result between the two teams in the South Carolina State Championships last fall.

The Port Royal Killer Bees, captained by Catherine Haight, got off to a bad start Friday, but came back to win in group and then defeat NC/Wilmington 2-1 in the final. The Bees lost a third-set match tiebreak that cost them the match Friday, but they solved that problem handily today with a couple no-nonsense, straight-set victories to clinch the 70s Women’s 3.0 title.

Two other HHI teams and one from Coastal Carolina lost in the finals: Port Royal Senior Moments, captained by Barb Steiger, in the 60s Women’s 4.0; Port Royal 60s Men’s 4.0, captained by Allen Zak; Sun City Court Jesters, captained by Bill Flack, in the 60s Men’s 3.0.

The 70s Men’s 3.0 Cruisers, captained by Bob Pentz, and Imposters, captained by Bob Hilton, have been at each other for several seasons. Again this time it was one of those third-set tiebreaks to decide the tournament championship. Maybe both teams will advance to Nationals and meet in the finals next month in Phoenix AZ.

The Sun City Court Jesters had lost only two courts in four in-group matches, but just couldn’t pull it off in the finals against GA/East Roswell. Port Royal Men’s 4.0s were HHI #2 seed at South Carolina States, got through that and four Sectional matches before falling in the final to GA/Atlanta International Tennis Academy. The Senior Moments likewise dropped only two courts in four team matches to advance to the finals, losing there to NC/Greensboro.

Here is a catch-up on a missing Saturday results, plus today’s scores involving HHI/CCTA teams plus the complete finals rundown:

ONE MORE TIME: No, We Don’t Read the Wall Street Journal, But

The following is from a WSJ news clip snailmailed by E-News reader Phil Perkins:

Delete “Island” from Amelia Plantation’s Name?

A corporate event planner, worried that an upcoming function would appear to be too extravagant, has asked Amelia Island Plantation if it would delete the word “island” from its address. Another potential business meeting client said it wouldn’t consider any hotel with the words “spa” or “resort” in its name. WSJ reports that Amelia (whatever) has lost about $750,000 since January because businesses and trade groups shun the negative publicity associated “with anything even remotely resembling a boondoggle.” The word “island” apparently means some place special.

(Hell, no problem here. With the nod to Sun City Hilton Head, Traditions Hilton Head, etc., many of the Hilton Head Island businesses only use “Hilton Head”. Some can’t make up their minds. Check the phone book and you find Hilton Head Beach & Tennis Resort listed on one page and the Hilton Head Island Beach & Tennis Resort on another … both with the same phone number. Just covering all bases, we guess.

NEW AGAIN IN 2009: Two years ago TENNIS E-News ran a well-received series of excerpts from "The Code, The Players' Guide for Unofficiated Matches". You have asked for a repeat? You got it.

A ball that has been served hits the receiver or, in doubles, the receiver’s partner before it touches the ground. Which player wins the point? The server wins the point, unless the serve is a let.

*Note: TENNIS E-News is not making up these items. All are taken word-for-word from USTA's "The Code" that can be found in the "Friend at Court" handbook or as a stand-alone leaflet -- available by going to http://www.usta.com and selecting "USTA Shop" and then "Books" on that page.
