Jesters in Finals; 2 HHI Teams Could Meet for Championship in Super Senior Sectionals
PELHAM AL (TENNIS E-NEWS via TennisLink) – Sun City Court Jesters advanced to the Sunday finals and four Hilton Head Island teams are a win away from the finals after unbeaten streaks for HHI and Coastal Carolina teams today at the USTA League Southern Sectional Super Senior Championships. Two of the HHI teams, if they win Sunday morning, will meet in the finals.
The Court Jesters took all six courts today to move into the 70s Men’s 3.0 final against the winner of a match in the morning. Meanwhile, Men’s and Women’s 60s Port Royal 4.0 teams each are unbeaten and need a morning win to advance to their respective finals. The PR Senior Moments won twice today and face GA/Columbus in that women’s final. The PR men also won twice today and take on NC “A” in the morning.
In 70s Men’s 3.0, South Carolina “A” Sea Pines Imposters are 3-0 and SC “B” Spring Lake Cruisers are 2-0 – each needing an early morning win to clinch their group #1 spots in the championship match.
Meanwhile, the 60s Men’s 3.5 Long Cove Super Retreads are a smidgen back, despite sweeping all six courts today. In Friday’s opening round, the Retreads lost to LA/New Orleans LA Nobodies 2-1, dropping two matches in super tiebreaks and winning one court 7-6, 7-6. They must win in the morning and hope for the Nobodies to stumble.
Winners in Sunday championships will advance to the National Super Senior Championships next month in Phoenix AZ.
Here is a catch-up on a missing Friday score, plus today’s results and Sunday’s schedule involving HHI/CCTA teams:

No, We Don’t Read the Wall Street Journal, But …
The following was emailed by E-News reader Frances Worthy from this week’s Wall Street Journal:
Is Tennis Hip Again?
Fresh data from the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association suggests that the fastest-growing sport in the country is...tennis. After years of stagnation, participation has grown 43% since 2000 and jumped 9.6% last year, while baseball, golf, gymnastics and football shed participants over the same period.
A tennis industry spokeswoman said the results came as "a shock," given the state of the economy. Still, the sport's organizing bodies have been actively trying to grow the game since 1993, with everything from "tennis welcome centers" to a rule barring high school tennis coaches from cutting anyone from the team.
In the trade group's survey of 40,000 Americans, tennis was one of only four sports to experience any increase during the study period and outpaced its nearest rival, racquetball, by 32%.
