Trip to Surprise AZ no Surprise

Sun City Court Jesters Heading to Nationals as Wild Card or Champion or Whatever …

BLUFFTON SC (TENNIS E-News) – With its captain Bill Flack recuperating from open heart surgery, the Sun City Court Jesters will be heading to Super Senior Nationals Apr. 27 in Surprise AZ. Recruited as acting captain, Charlie Smith said that once the team got to Southern Section finals in Birmingham it was no surprise it was Natonals-bound because Southern already had been awarded a wildcard.

Although provided with “an excellent excuse for losing that final,” Smith said the team did not know at the time that the eventual Southern champion Atlanta had declined to go to Nationals. So wildcard or champion, the Jesters will be Southern’s representative in the Men’s 6.0 division. Super Seniors compete in straight rated divisions – 3.0, 3.5, 4.0 – in local, state and section, National is played in combo format. The 3.0 Jesters could be, and are liable to be, playing doubles teams of a 3.5 playing with a 2.5 partner. Use of the straight or combo format is decided at each Section level.

The Hilton Head Island and Coastal Carolina league teams had Southern champions in the 60s and 70s, but to this point there is no Natonal 70s. This is sort of like the Senior 2.5 division, in that there do not seem to be 70s anywhere else but in Southern. Maybe they have all moved South so they can play year-round.

Smith reports that Captain Flack, who underwent surgery at the Cleveland Clinic, is “doing quite well at home.”

Junior Team Tennis Gets Ready for Spring/Summer Season

BLUFFTON SC (TENNIS E-NEWS) – PTI Beaufort Country Junior Team Tennis is getting set up for its Spring/Summer schedule, the final segment of the 2008/09 season. Play will begin about May 1 and end with the State Championship in Sumter (Intermediate and Advanced Divisions) the weekend of July 17.

Registration will open Apr. 25 and close May 25. Coaches have the team number necessary for registration. USTA membership at a special rate of $19 is required. Practices are generally mid-week with matches both mid-week but mostly weekends, according to Local League Coordinator Bob Brown, who also coaches the Bluffton Badkatz.

Playing divisions:

-12 and Under Intermediate and Beginner

-14 and Under Intermediate and Beginner

-18 and Under Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced

- 10 and Under Division or younger will be created if a need arises. JTT can begin using the Quick Start format as young as age 6.

New this year is the 18 Under Beginner Division designed for the advanced beginner perhaps high school junior varsity or below. Also, to showcase the area’s top talent, an 18 Under Advanced team will form. If only one “all-star” type team arises, they will play, but not affect, the 18 and Under Intermediate and automatically advance to States. Players can dual roster but should both of teams advance can play on only one.

JTT features (not for QuickStart format) co-ed teams playing boys and girls singles and doubles plus mixed doubles, in eight-game pro sets with total games accumulating throughout the season to determine a champion. A $50 team fee (paid online) plus a uniform fee generally provides for several practices and matches, refreshments and balls. No player need be present for all matches/practices.

More information can be found at http://www.sctennis.com (click Junior Team Tennis). Rules can be seen at http://www.blufftontennis.com. More than 190 juniors played in last season’s league. Coach staff mostly are certified professionals. Venues include Bluffton High, Beaufort High, Hilton Head Island Middle, SCYacht, Wexford, Chaplin Park, Hampton Hall and others. Coordinator Brown said that new players will be placed on a existing team if needed or a new team will be formed.

A Family Full of Tennis

Letter from a devoted fan and a birthday wish to a devoted player

To TENNIS E-NEWS – Hi Dennis,

I receive your emails and appreciate all the time and effort you devote, letting all of us know just what is going on in the world of tennis. But, I do have one little request: Would it be possible to wish my husband Bob Perrone a happy 73rd birthday from his very proud wife of 48 years? He is on his way for the 2nd time to Super Senior Nationals in Arizona at the end of April. This will be a repeat for the Nationals. He has devoted many years to the sport and also has raised a son who is a professional. Also, we have a 10-year-old grandson who will be in Delray Beach for a national tournament the week before. At 10 he is ranked nationally. Our 2 other grandsons are also USTA tennis players and have competed in national tournaments. I am sure there are many who have some great stories in this world but I am so proud of my husband and his accomplishments. What more can I say?

Thank you again,

Joan Perrone

NEW AGAIN IN 2009: Two years ago TENNIS E-News ran a well-received series of excerpts from "The Code, The Players' Guide for Unofficiated Matches". You have asked for a repeat? You got it.

Do the players change ends after a 7-point tiebreak is played to decide a set? Yes.

*Note: TENNIS E-News is not making up these items. All are taken word-for-word from USTA's "The Code" that can be found in the "Friend at Court" handbook or as a stand-alone leaflet -- available by going to http://www.usta.com and selecting "USTA Shop" and then "Books" on that page.
