Alley Cats Win Women's 2.5 Championship at Adult States
HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News by TennisLink) -- The Bluffton HS Alley Cats brought the HHI leagues their first South Carolina Adult State Championship since 2005, winning the Women's 2.5 title today at Charleston Tennis Center. The Women's 4.5 Palmetto Dunes States or Busts lost in the finals.
The Alley Cats, captained by Dianne Austin, got the day started with an early 2-1 win over Low Country #1 Daniel Island in the semifinals. They came back at midday to defeat Grand Strand's Prestwick Playas 2-1 in the final.
The Cats got two singles wins today from Lisa Kempthorne and two wins at #2 doubles by the team of Iris Petrillo and Aimee Stephens. The champions went 3-0 in their group round robin Saturday and Sunday.
The Women's 4.5 PD gals, captained by Michelle Clark, were unable to pull off another comeback like they did Sunday to advance to the finals. They won a third-set match tiebreak, but lost three other matches in straight sets.
The Adult 3.0 and 3.5 divisions will battle for state championships May 31-June 2 in Greenville.
The Alley Cats, along with other Adult winners from Greenville and champions from Senior states, will advance to the Southern Section Championships in July in Mobile AL against teams from Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina and Tennessee.
