HHI's Golden Bear Claws Win Men's 3.5 Senior State Championship

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- Hilton Head Island's usually strong showing in the South Carolina Senior State Championships came up short on Wheaties today, with the Men's 3.5 Indigo Run Golden Bear Claws the sole Island league team to win a championship against non-local teams. The Men's and Women's 2.5 divisions had only HHI teams, so you can add those two championships to locals.

Six HHI league teams went into today's semifinals. The Men's 3.0 Shipyard Rockets made it through the semifinals, but lost in the finals. Others lost in the semifinals.

It's 7:30 p.m. and the USTA SC score reporting system has yet to post some of the 10 a.m. match scores. However, TENNIS E-News learned from Island Packet's Sam McDowell that the Men's 4.0 Port Royal lost in the semifinals. Whenever the USTA SC catches up with itself, TENNIS E-News will get the complete results for you.

The 2.5s. Remember the 2.5s? The Women's title was decided and reported Sunday -- championship to Sun City Rally Girls. Those Men's results likewise aren't posted, but TENNIS E-News has it on good authority. 2.5 coordinator Sue Cook: "…After talking to the captain, I know we have a definite winner … Moss Creek 2.5 senior men, Wayne Effron, captain. The team went 3-0.

The Women's 4.5 Indigo Run Golden Bearnaked Ladies went into the day on top of the division round robin, but ended up in a three-way first-place tie. The Ladies, Lexington and Low Country each had 4-2 records. Lexington and HHI each had 11 court wins and seven losses. Low Country went 10-8. Lexington, however, lost only 15 sets; the Indigo Run gals lost 17.
We'll catch up with the rest of the results whenever ……….
