More Than $1,500 for Court Fund

Hubbard Winner of Two Championships in The Woody at Chaplin Park

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- Kelley Hubbard came up winner of two doubles championships in the 2nd Annual PTI Woody Tournament played over the weekend at Chaplin Public Tennis Center to benefit the court-building fund and to celebrate National Tennis Month.

Hubbard teamed with Gloria Taylor to win the Women's 3.0 round robin and then with Bob Blohm for the Mixed 3.0 title.

The tournament that incorporated wood rackets in a format of men's, women's and mixed doubles had 31 participants, up from 22 last year. That translated into 20 doubles teams, compared to 11 in '07.

Expanding the doubles format and including a y'all-come Tennis Block Party Saturday brought in a total of $1,541.50 from entry fees, refreshment sales, prize drawings, a silent auction and the fast-serve competition. All proceeds will go to People For Parks and will help pay off PTI's obligation of $75,000 towards recent construction of two new courts at CPTC.

Player's World of Sports, Custom Water Solutions and FB3 (For Boaters By Boaters) were major sponsors of both events, with Ray Hardy and Tim Ryan directing the tournament and Jen Gajdalo and Julie Jilly engineering the block party.

The fast-serve competition at the Block Party involved players donating $5 to the court fund for 10 serves and a chance to win Head tennis bags donated by the PTR. Winners were: Junior Division -- Roman Battistelli, 74 mph; Women's -- Carolyn Kraus, 65 mph; Men's -- James Malkin and Tim Ryan tied at 88 mph with Ryan winning with a tiebreak serve of 87 mph.

A PTI US Open Ticket Fundraiser will go into full gear shortly, also to benefit the court fund. A special round robin open to the public will be held during the July 4 holiday weekend, during which the US Open ticket winner will be determined.

Season Runs Through Mid-July

Super Senior Combo Up & Running in Men's & Women's 6.5 & 7.5

HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) -- The Island's sophomore year of Super Senior Combo has turned coed, with two men's divisions joining the format that last year's inaugural season had only women's teams. The Women's 6.5 and 7.5 got started first; the Men's same divisions begin June 3 and 10, respectively.

Rosters remain open in all divisions. Players interested in joining a team should contact a participating club or email local coordinator Kathy Foulke at kathyfoulke@netscape.net.

Also Adult and Senior Mixed Doubles are lined up and ready for first matches early next month. Willing players not attached to a team should contact a participating club or email coordinator Jackie Reynecke at jackie@palmettodunes.com.

The mixed doubles numbers have taken a leap up, thanks mostly to an increase in Seniors from 14 teams in 2007 to 21 this summer. Adults are up from 21 to 23.
