Champions Galore at the Junior Banana Challenge; Friends of the Children Big Winner
HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC (TENNIS E-News) – Thomas Clement of France and Trey Hale of USA battled through three long sets today in the 1st annual Junior Banana International Davis Cup before the Paris junior came out on top in a third-set tiebreak 6-3; 4-6; 7-6 (12-10) for the Boys' 18s championship.
Okay, so we embellished the title a bit. And we're more likely to have a player from Paris KY than France. But it was pretty exciting nonetheless at the 2nd annual Junior Banana Challenge finals at Palmetto Dunes Tennis Center. Hale can't feel all that badly in that he won the Boys' 16s championship of the Tournament Division.
Sam Trimble should be a pretty happy dude too, having won the Boys' 12s and 14s. His 12s win came today over Merritt Wilburn 6-3, 6-3. Yesterday, the two met in the 14s round robin and Trimble won 6-4, 5-7, 10-0.
Under the tournament format set up by Director Jackie Reynecke, novice juniors played 8-game pro sets with a 7-point tie-break if tied at 7-all; tournament level play two sets with a 10-point super tiebreak if split.
The second annual event was presented by Dr. James Gigante and Friends of the Children to support research at the Charles Darby Research Center in Charleston. Proceeds from entry fees, drawings and a silent auction all go to the center.
Here are the complete weekend results of the Tournament Division, plus today's Tournament and Novice Division. Friday/Saturday Tournament Division results are in green (boys) and blue (girls). Novice Division Friday/Saturday results were in Saturday's TENNIS E-News. (Players are HHI unless otherwise noted):
